Text to Speech, One Word at a Time

Paste text, hear it read aloud, and follow the spoken position one word, phrase, or sentence at a time.

Most text-to-speech tools are designed for listening in the background. Single Word Reader is for people who want to listen and keep their eyes anchored to the same place. It reads your pasted text aloud while the reading display follows the spoken position.

Open the reader, paste your text, press Go, then select the audio button to begin readback. There is no account to create.

A fixed reading point instead of a moving page

Conventional read-aloud tools usually highlight a word inside a paragraph and scroll the page as the voice moves. This reader removes the surrounding paragraph during playback. The current word appears at one stable point, which can make the spoken position easier to find.

The display can show:

  • One word for the least visual clutter.
  • Three-word phrases for more context.
  • One sentence for dense or unfamiliar material.

Change the display mode in Settings before starting audio. The visible word, phrase, or sentence will follow the browser's spoken position.

How to paste text and read it aloud

  1. Copy the article, email, notes, or passage you want to read.
  2. Paste it into Single Word Reader and press Go.
  3. Open Settings if you want to change the display mode, text size, or typeface.
  4. Choose whether audio is muted or unmuted.
  5. Press Play to start reading, then press it again to pause.

Play always controls start and pause. The audio button only chooses between silent reading and synchronized browser speech.

Choose context before speed

One-word display is not automatically better or faster. If the meaning feels fragmented, switch to phrases or sentences. For technical, legal, or study material, the extra context is usually more useful than pushing the pace.

Audio speed follows the reading-speed setting approximately, but the exact voice and timing depend on your browser and operating system. Browser speech engines do not all report word boundaries in exactly the same way, so synchronization can vary between devices.

Text-to-speech without an AI upload feature

Single Word Reader does not run its own AI voice service or require an account. It asks the speech synthesis feature built into your browser to read the text. The available voice and whether speech processing is local or network-backed depend on that browser, operating system, and selected system voice.

If the text is sensitive, check your browser or device's speech-service privacy settings before using audio. Silent word-by-word playback is processed by the reader itself in the page.

When this reading style is useful

Listening while following a fixed visual point may help when proofreading, reviewing study notes, resting tired eyes, or keeping your place in a passage. It is a reading option, not a medical treatment, and it will not suit everyone. Start with a short passage and choose the mode that preserves your comprehension.
