Frequently Asked Questions
What is Single Word Reader?
Single Word Reader is a browser-based focus reader that shows pasted text one word, phrase, or sentence at a time.
Does it upload my pasted text?
The site does not upload your text. Text-only playback stays in your browser. Audio is handled by your browser or operating system, and the selected voice may use an online speech service, so check your device settings before using sensitive text.
Can it read pasted text aloud?
Yes. Press Go, then use the audio button to hear the full text through your browser's built-in voice while the display follows the spoken position.
Can I listen and follow one word at a time?
Yes. Choose One word in Settings, then start audio. You can also follow in three-word phrases or full sentences when you want more context.
Is this built specifically for dyslexia?
It is designed with dyslexia-friendly controls in mind, but it is not a medical product. Some readers may prefer it for focus and tracking, while others may prefer normal text.
What speed should I use?
Start around 180 to 250 words per minute. Increase only if comprehension stays comfortable.
Why include phrase and sentence modes?
Single-word reading can remove useful context. Phrase and sentence modes give readers a slower, more contextual option.
Who developed Single Word Reader?
Single Word Reader was created by David Taylor.
